Athletics round-up
This year was the biggest year ever for UL Athletics with a record number of athletes participating in all our matches.
SESSA outdoors was a brilliant kick start to the season, the women out-performing the men with an athlete in every final and medals in all but one event. Even two ULU records were broken by Sara Luck (our athlete of the match) and the womens 4×200m relay team.
The ‘war of the colleges’ - the University of London Athletics Championships - was a great success with more athletes than ever turning up to run, jump or throw their way into the UL history books. UCL sneaked past Imperial to steal the huge shield trophy, whilst Imperial Medics got their own back by winning the traditional University Hospitals cup.
Despite the violent outbursts of heavy rain there were some excellent individual performances and even the smaller colleges RVC and St. Georges were represented, making it a great day for university sport.
Our campaign at the BUSA’s this year saw the UL Track and Field women’s team come 8th out of all the other uni’s in the UK at the indoor event, the top 6 universities were sports specialists. The jumps made up a big part of our final points with Angela Barrett (Bronze medal, Triple Jump) and Alison Macleod making their Long Jump finals. The BUSA outdoors highlight was a Bronze medal and another ULU record in the womens 4×400m relay with a young team who will all excitingly be eligible to compete for the next few years.
Star individual performances throughout the year were Sara Luck, competing in the Indoor City Challenge Final for London, and Henrietta Kodilinye-Sims ranked 11th in UK for 400m, who also won the B-Final at the Olympic trials after a disastrous heat and represented England at the Loughborough International to win the 4×400m relay.
Next season Lea Valley Park have kindly offered us a grant so that we can hold even more of our “Big Group” training sessions throughout the winter for all abilities where you can just “come, try an event” and set up Team ULU relay practices.
Well done to everyone who has competed this year, and special congratulations to Christine Ohuruogu the new Olympic Champion! We are so proud to have you as an alumni.
