Mullan sacked
Chris Mullan has been sacked from his position as KCLSU President after his appeal was rejected.
In a statement released today (Friday November 21st), the union’s Board of Trustees “confirmed his dismissal as an employee of KCLSU” and “decided to remove Chris Mullan as a Sabbatical Trustee and President of KCLSU.”
The decision follows months of wrangling after Mullan was accused of racism following a row over comments he made at an NUS training event.
The five-page document detailing the trustees’ decision said: “The comments made by Chris were a breach of KCLSU’s equal opportunities policy as Chris singled out local FE students and widening participation students in an unfavourable way as more likely to carry guns and knives.
“It is reasonable to draw the inference that Chris was also doing this on the basis of irrelevant distinctions including but not limited to colour, ethnic and/or national origins, parental status and socio-economic background.”
An earlier NUS investigation: “accepted that [Mullan] had not intended to cause offence, and found that the question had not been motivated by any racist agenda. The investigation therefore found that there was a breach of NUS’ Equal Opportunities Policy, but the complaint of racism was not upheld.”
It did suggest that he undertake diversity training.
A KCLSU spokesperson added: “During this difficult period, KCLSU’s commitment to supporting King’s students has continued regardless and will remain our focus going forward.”
