VAULT: Festival of film, theatre and music

The Old Vic Tunnels, Station Approach Road, London SE1 8SW

 Friday 10th  – Sunday 26th February 2012

Supported by Ideas Tap and the Old Vic Tunnels.

Heritage Arts proudly presents VAULT – London’s new three-week arts festival of theatre, film and music.  Explore the underground labyrinth of the Old Vic Tunnels to experience the award-winning Silent Opera, Kindle Theatre’s The Furies, a film programme curated by Hammer and the flicker club and many more undiscovered gems.  VAULT is ground-breaking.  It crosses boundaries and invites a vibrant and hip audience to embrace the arts in an innovative way.

Silent Opera reboots La bohème as silent disco combines live opera with an incredible new recording of Puccini’s orchestral score.  After their definitive Dido & Aeneas (February 2011), Silent Opera will re-energise one of the most successful and enduring operas of all time, bringing it headlong into our high-tech world.  The opera takes place in an immersive environment – through personal headphones, each visitor will hear a full opera orchestra and chorus while live singers perform around them.  With sponsorship from Sky Arts, Sennheiser, IdeasTap, the Royal Opera House and the Old Vic, Silent Opera promises to excite and enthuse audiences, from novice opera-goers to hardened enthusiasts.  Opera is set loose.

Kindle Theatre’s The Furies unites theatre and live music, combining rock, metal and soul with text and poetry to retell the story of Clytemnestra – a woman betrayed – through the eyes of her band of Furies.  This is the ultimate tale of envy, rage and revenge.

The flicker club screens movies adapted from short stories and novels and invites surprise celebrity guests to read before showing a big-screen incarnation of their source.  Previous guests have included Steven Berkoff, Joan Collins, Bill Nighy and Sir Ian McKellen.  For VAULT, the flicker club teams up with Britain’s legendary Hammer, to resurrect chilling classics alongside their 21st century counterparts.

At 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, VAULT will open for the Lates – live music catering to all tastes and fancies where you can dance into the early hours.  One night will see the infamous annual B-Movie Ball curated by Kenton Halliday plus screens, live bands, dancers, DJs, magicians, tarot readings and, of course, champagne prizes for fancy dress.  There will also be a night with the Low Suns whose bombastic cinematic sounds and heartbreak vocals led them to be chosen by Coldplay to open with them last December.   Other highlights at the Lates include Videopia and Woodburner where Bard will be launching their new album.

There is so much more… Step into Streetwise Opera’s magical world of folklore with Fables – A Film Opera, short films created by some of the UK’s leading composers and filmmakers and 125 performers who have experienced homelessness.   See how the power of singing has changed lives.  The Folk Contraption by Rogues Gallery is an album of short plays with music – an eclectic night of storytelling, folk music and a magical mystery tour.  Brand New Love Story is Richard Marsh and Katie Bonna’s brilliant new play about how two hapless romantics try to make a one-night stand last a lifetime.  A comic love story of good intentions, bad timing and quite a lot of weddings.

The spectacular puppets and sets of the award-winning Pangolin’s Teatime star in The Great Puppet Horn - a cutting, satirical, shadow-puppet comedy, providing cultural critique as only cardboard on a stick can.  The audience explores links between objects and characters’ memories in Broken Loops, a digitally interactive performance by Rolemop Theatre.  This production relies on the interaction and involvement of audience members to influence the order and progression of the narrative, using a series of audio-visual triggers that show memories as projected video.  The path of each unique performance will be determined by the audience.

After your main show, if you still want more, Baxter Valentine and Bobby Windebank will entertain you with high-quality compered cabaret, music and comedy.  The VAULT is a never-ending exploration of the arts also featuring Eye Saw Theatre, The Wonder Club’s Don’t stray from the path, OTB’s Descent presented by comedian Tom Rosenthal, Punt (an evening of pun-filled fun) and much, much more.

Heritage Art’s creative producer, Tim Wilson said “VAULT is all about the people… This will be the greatest arts’ festival melting pot that London has ever seen – it’s a new Edinburgh, a new Bogota, a Babylon of voices and talent from opening time at 2pm till midnight and beyond.”
