‘Tough love’ for graduates at home
The government has released a guide urging parents of new graduates to show ‘tough love’ to encourage their children to get jobs.
The guide, entitled ‘Parent Motivators’ has been released by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills with advice for parents and recent graduates to help them cope with the recession. Parents are warned not to make life ‘too comfortable’ at home for their unemployed children.
Well stocked fridges, doing laundry and generous allowances are all on the list of ‘do-not’s’ for parents, while job-seeking graduates are urged to go out and find work as quickly as possible.
The sixteen page document also has instructions on how to network, find internships and use volunteering opportunities as a stepping stone for a career.
Those who wish to pursue more artistic careers are faced with grimnews however: potential actors and writers are advised not to “waste away their years”, while those guilty of student life excesses are instructed to “get rid of any compromising photos” which potential employers may stumble upon online.
The recession has hit university leavers particularly hard: one in tengraduates were jobless last year, with some institutions recording as many as one in five being unable to secure work or post-graduate study six months after graduation. As result, many graduates have opted to live at home while they look for work.
London Mayor Boris Johnson upgrades graduate recruitment site
Boris Johnson’s office have announced the creation of a new jobs board on the ‘Helping Graduates into Work’ website intended to help graduates and other Londoners find work.
In July Johnson visited the University of London Union (ULU) to attend the official launch of the site which is administered by The Careers Group, University of London. The site has since garnered considerable interest from both jobseekers and employers wishing to advertise vacancies.
The Mayor said:
“With so many opportunities now up on our site it shows there is high demand for the extraordinary talent produced by the capital’s renowned universities. I am confident that we will be continually adding new opportunities as more employers hear about this unique website and learn what an excellent gateway it is to London’s graduate market place.”
Director of The Careers Group, Anne-Marie Martin, commented:
“We have been astonished by the response to the site, which has been terrific. The addition of live current vacancies will provide the finishing touch to a fantastic resource for graduate jobseekers in London.”
Ed Henry, University of London student called the website “clear, concise and user-friendly”
“It provides encouragement alongside practical advice, and reminds job hunters that their degree allows them access to a far greater range of careers than they probably think.
It constitutes an excellent resource for students in these tough times for graduates.”
